Vineyard Region:

Taggart Vineyard is located in the Rapaura subregion of Marlborough. It is situated near the Wairau River which formed the free draining soils the vineyard is planted on. The even silt loam soils are perfect for ripe rich Pinot Gris. The leaves are removed to expose the fruit to allow for even ripening. This was achieved with true kiwi ingenuity using sheep roaming the vineyard...we like to call it sheep plucked.

Vintage Conditions:
Marlborough was blessed with another exceptional year in 2011, especially for Pinot Gris. Bud break was late September and was followed by a warm spring without frost. Adequate rainfall and warm temperatures meant the shoots grew quickly and flowering was earlier than normal. After January the season cooled which allowed for an extended ripening period.

100% Pinot Gris

2010 Mud House Single Vineyard Caseys Road Marlborough Pinot Noir

$199.26

The hand harvested grapes were destemed (but not crushed) in small open top fermenters. The must was then kept cold for a 7 day cold soak to extract softer tannins. The grapes were then allowed to warm and fermentation began naturally, uninocculated. The must was hand plunged up to 4 times a day and then pressed off the skins once dry, and when the tannin structure was complete. After a short settling, the wine was run into 1 year old French barrels and underwent spring malolactic fermentation. After 10 months in oak the wine was racked from barrel and prepared for bottling.

Vineyard Region:

The wine was sourced from the Hard Case Vineyard on Caseys Road in the Blind River subregion of the Awatere Valley in Marlborough. The vineyard has earned its name due to the shallow, light soil which, although a challenge, results in elegant, inviting Pinot Noir.

Vintage Conditions:
The 2010 Marlborough growing season started with cool but stable weather through flowering. As a result the vines gave us an even fruit set but with naturally lower yields. The cool weather continued into autumn. This colder than usual start to the season extended the ripening period, which is perfect for intensifying flavours and concentrating aromatics. A later burst of warm and settled weather meant we reached maximum sugar ripeness without any problems or disease pressure. In the winery things were as calm as the weather – the fruit quality was excellent, the flavours and concentration were outstanding and the winery team was smiling. A dream harvest.
Grape Variety:
100% Pinot Noir.
Maturation:
The wine was matured for 10 months in 1 year old French barriques.
